Social Science

The social science major offers a highly interdisciplinary curriculum coupled with an incredible amount of flexibility — providing the opportunity to customize a course of study to best fit students’ interests and serve their professional goals. The program is built on a solid foundation of social theory, research methods, and critical thinking skills. Students then build upon this common foundation by choosing courses from any three of seven social science disciplines.

Social Work

Our nationally accredited program offers a distinctly personal touch, with small class sizes, collaborative research, and individualized advising by the same faculty member throughout the program. Our program is grounded in the mission of Providence College — scholarship, service, respect for the dignity of all people, and responsible citizenship within our society and in the global community.

Sociology

Through active, engaged learning and student participation, sociology students are challenged to approach their world critically and to achieve a nuanced understanding of how stratification, marginalization, and institutionalization impact society at large and individual opportunities, experiences, and realities.

Spanish

Majoring in a foreign language is much more than just learning a foreign language. Our majors and minors become proficient Spanish, French, German, or Italian readers, writers, and speakers. But, our hope for students goes deeper than that. We want our students to become even more culturally proficient — understanding how the cultures they are studying are different from their own and also accepting of the connections.

Theology

The theology department at Providence College draws upon sacred scripture and the Church’s tradition in pursuing scholarly, theological inquiry “from the heart of the Church.” Our program provides a foundation of knowledge in the teachings of the Catholic Church and explores the best of contemporary scholarship in Scripture, moral and spiritual theology, liturgy, and systematics.

Women’s and Gender Studies

The women’s and gender studies program is a rigorous and interdisciplinary program that places women’s lives, perspectives, and experiences at the center of inquiry. Students actively and reflexively learn about women’s diverse lived realities, struggles, and contributions through the lenses of race, class, gender, sexuality, culture, ethnicity, age, physical condition, and nationality.
